Today we honor and celebrate the retirement of Larry Grenz, who has dedicated more than 44 years of service to Scotchman Industries.
Larry began his journey with us on May 21, 1979, shortly after earning his welding certification from Western Dakota Technical Institute in Rapid City. He started by welding small parts used in the 314 and 424 ironworkers, working under supervisors Charlie Bowen and Steve Kroetch.
During the 1982 industry recession, Larry was laid off for about two months. Upon his return, he transitioned to the machining department, where he operated the Rambaudi milling machine.
When Scotchman acquired XL from Canada, Larry played a key role in welding the 70-ton and 90-ton XL machines for nearly a decade. Over the years, he demonstrated incredible versatility, contributing in nearly every area of the shop—including welding, ironworker assembly, sawing, grinding, CNC machining and lathes, manual machining, final assembly, R&D, and more. Larry also took on special projects such as building jigs, fixtures, and heat-treat baskets, and even assisted in the paint department—despite once joking that he’d rather leave the painting to the painters.
His adaptability and willingness to go wherever he was needed made him an invaluable team member.
In 2009, during a downturn in production, Larry made a selfless decision: he volunteered to leave so that younger employees could keep their jobs. He worked in Rapid City for a few years at RPM, and in April 2011, we were thrilled to welcome him back to the Scotchman team.
Since returning, Larry has continued to contribute in deburring, sawing, and welding. No matter the task, you could always count on him to get the job done.

Larry says welding has always been his favorite part of the job—it’s exciting, always evolving, and full of variety. He takes special pride in having built some of the first machines to come off our assembly lines, as well as overhead hoists and welding stall jigs that continue to serve our operations.
It’s been an absolute privilege to have you as part of the Scotchman family. We are incredibly grateful for your hard work, dedication, and heart over the past four decades. Thanks Larry!!!
