Employee Spotlight: Karen Hart
Blade Sharpener | Scotchman Industries
Behind every clean, precise cut made with a cold saw blade is someone who made sure that blade was ready for the job. At Scotchman Industries, Karen Hart is one of the people responsible for that precision.
Karen works as a blade sharpener, where her main responsibilities include repairing and sharpening cold saw blades and putting teeth on blank blades, so they are ready for use. It’s detailed, hands-on work that requires patience, focus, and a strong commitment to quality—something Karen brings to the shop every day.
A Day in the Life
Karen’s workweek starts early and steady. On Mondays, she begins by checking in blades that arrived late Friday and getting them into the sharpening process. As new orders come in throughout the day, those blades are checked in and added to the workflow.
From there, the focus is simple: keep sharpening. Whether restoring blades that have seen heavy use or preparing new blades from blanks, Karen keeps the process moving so customers receive blades that are ready to perform.
The Satisfaction of a Challenge
One of the things Karen enjoys most about her job is the variety that comes through the shop.
“I like when we get unique blades in—like thicker blades or colorful blades,” she says. “It’s also really rewarding when a badly damaged blade comes in and you can make it look like new again.”
Those challenges are where Karen’s skills shine. Turning something worn or damaged back into a high-performing tool brings a level of satisfaction that keeps the work interesting day after day.
Pride in Doing the Job Right
When asked about her proudest professional accomplishment, Karen’s answer is simple and honest: knowing she always does the best job she can.
That dedication to doing quality work—no matter the task—is part of what makes Karen such a valuable member of the Scotchman team.
Life Outside the Shop
When she’s not sharpening blades, Karen enjoys spending time with her family, especially her grandkids. She also loves gardening and raising chickens, which keep her busy at home.
Another favorite hobby is baking—particularly pies and cookies. If there’s a gathering with family or friends, there’s a good chance Karen has brought something fresh from the oven.
Karen and her family also share their home with Louie, their loyal dog, he’s an Dogo Argentino.
A Journey of Hard Work
Karen graduated high school in 1981 and went on to attend some technical school. Before joining Scotchman Industries, she held several different roles, including working at a grocery store, running a daycare, and handling a mail run in Colorado.
Those varied experiences helped shape the strong work ethic and practical problem-solving skills she brings to her role today.
Inspiration and Looking Ahead
Karen says the person who inspires her most is her mother, whose influence continues to guide her today.
Looking to the future, Karen says her dream job is retirement—something she’s steadily building toward. One of the things she appreciates most about her role at Scotchman is the four-day workweek, which allows her to maintain a great balance between work and personal life while planning for the years ahead.
