Made in America: Millennials in Manufacturing Today

The “Made In America” movement continues as millennials decide to join the manufacturing workforce.

In fact, Ford Motor Company found that 91% of millennials believe American manufacturers make products equal to or better quality than foreign competitors, like China. And, 74% agree purchasing American-made products is important.

Second Most Competitive Manufacturing Economy

Recently announced by Deloitte and Council on Competitiveness in the 2016 Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index, the United States is the second most competitive manufacturing economy in the world after China.

But that’s not all. By 2020, global manufacturing executives predict that the United States will be the most competitive manufacturing economy in the world. So why is this? One big factor to our economy’s success is the availability of advanced technologies and materials, and the strength of intellectual property protections.

The United States is beating China on both fronts.

At Scotchman, we’re happy to see advanced manufacturing technologies push the United States back to being the most competitive manufacturing nation in the world.

Our new 50-ton, 5-station turret hydraulic ironworker, model 5014-ET comes with standard electric stroke controls for more precise and accurate work. The 5014-ET has a revolving turret punch station, holding three difference punches with rotating size options. Upgrading to the new 5014-ET ironworker not only increases the machine’s accuracy and precision, but it extends the life of the machine too! The new electric stroke has eliminated virtually all moving parts that come with a mechanical system, making maintenance and troubleshooting a cinch.

The “Made in America” Generation

Besides technology, another major factor in the future competitiveness of our country is talent. We need millennials to take the reins and enter the manufacturing workforce in order for our competitive leads to continue.

Excerpt from Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index:

“...leading countries are taking a much more balanced approach to talent, cost competitiveness, and innovation to set themselves apart from the global crowds.”

Millennials have the talent and work ethic to embrace the ever-changing manufacturing landscape, while understanding high-level technologies and multitasking between processes.
