Scotchman Circular Saw Blades: What Sets Us Apart
When it comes to choosing a circular saw blade, the steel grade is only part of the equation.
Two blades can both be classified as DM05, but that does not necessarily mean they will deliver the same cutting performance, blade life, or consistency. The quality of the steel, raw materials, heat treatment, tempering, and manufacturing process all play an important role in the finished blade.
It Starts With the Steel
There are permitted tolerances in the chemical composition of DM05 steel. In lower-cost steel production, more expensive alloying elements may be kept toward the lower end of the permitted range while still meeting the specification.
The quality and control of recycled material used during the steelmaking process can also affect the consistency of the finished steel. Recycled material is widely used in steel production, but the quality, selection, and traceability of that material remain important considerations.
Heat Treatment Matters
The steel grade is only the starting point.
The hardening process—and particularly the subsequent tempering cycles—has a major influence on the final hardness, toughness, internal stresses, and overall performance of a saw blade.
Highly controlled heat-treatment processes allow manufacturers to precisely manage temperatures, cycles, and repeatability. These factors contribute to producing steel with consistent characteristics from batch to batch.
That's why the difference isn't simply “European DM05 vs. Asian DM05.”
