Employee Spotlight: Karen Kroetch

Job Title: Retiree in Waiting (Former CFO)

After more than 45 years of dedication to Scotchman, Karen Kroetch is now in the home stretch as she prepares for retirement. But even as she wraps up her time here, her work ethic and passion for the company are as strong as ever.

A Day in the Life

As Karen approaches retirement, her typical day at the office has a unique blend of reflection and future planning. "I spend my extra time cleaning out 45 years worth of files—both digital and paper," she says with a smile. “I also spend a lot of time in meetings, helping out with the development stage of our major software update that’s coming this summer and fall.”

What Drives Her

When asked about her favorite part of the job, Karen doesn’t hesitate: “I’ve always loved to crunch numbers—call me strange!” Her affinity for numbers has been a cornerstone of her career, and it’s clear her passion for the work is one of the things she’ll miss most about Scotchman.

The Challenges

Like many dedicated employees, Karen admits that delegation has always been a challenge. “I’m a bit of a control freak,” she shares. “It can be hard to find enough time to get everything done.”

Professional Pride

One accomplishment Karen is particularly proud of is the company culture she helped build. “When we owned the company, Jerry and I worked hard to make it feel like a ‘family,’ and I believe that we both really achieved that,” she reflects.

A Glimpse Beyond the Office

Outside of work, Karen is an avid traveler who loves motorcycle rides and road trips, particularly on her Harley or in her Shelby Mustang (maybe Jerry’s). She also enjoys reading and keeping up with her grandkids' activities.

Family holds a special place in her heart—Karen and Jerry have shared 45 wonderful years of marriage, and he is her steadfast support, or as she affectionately puts it, her better half. Together, they have two children, three granddaughters, and a grandson, but no pets, as she frequently finds herself on the move. Although she has traveled extensively, there remains a vast world to explore: “My dream is to travel the world,” she shares.

Background and Education

Growing up on a small ranch north of Philip, Karen has always had a strong work ethic, which was instilled by her parents. She attended a one-room country school before going on to graduate from Philip High School. After earning an associate’s degree in business, she decided to pursue her Bachelor’s degree years later while balancing work and family. “I completed my degree through night classes at Black Hills State University, graduating the week before my son’s high school graduation.”

Parting Thoughts

As Karen prepares for the next chapter, she reflects on her journey at Scotchman: "The best part of my job has been the friendships I've made over the years. This really has been my dream job."

We wish Karen all the best as she checks off her bucket list and enjoys her well-earned retirement. Scotchman has certainly been lucky to have someone as dedicated, passionate, and hardworking as she’s been over the years.
